7 Reasons to Get a Mattress Topper

Posted by Meagan Kay on

A good mattress should provide comfort and support. But even with the best mattress, some people’s bodies need a little extra something to ensure they get the best sleep possible — and a mattress topper can be that much-needed cherry on top. We’ve put together a list of the benefits of mattress toppers, so you can determine if one is right for you.

1. It Adds an Extra Layer of Comfort and Support

Spinal Alignment

One of the best reasons to get a mattress topper is that it provides additional pressure-relieving support. This is especially true of memory foam mattress toppers — including the Bear Pro Topper — which makes them a great solution for people who suffer from neck or back pain.

But even if you don’t have any chronic pain, a mattress topper will make your sleeping situation even more plush and luxurious. For example, if your mattress is just a little too firm for your liking, adding a topper will give it a little more cushion.

2. It Protects Your Mattress

Some of the biggest culprits of mattress damage include spills, dust mites, pet hair, sweat, and allergens. Though we recommend using a mattress protector as well, a mattress topper adds a layer of protection between the world and your mattress, and therefore helps it last longer.

The Bear Pro Mattress Topper is also made with copper-infused memory foam. As a natural antimicrobial agent, copper can help prevent the build-up of all that yucky stuff in both your mattress and the mattress topper itself.

3. It’s an Affordable Way to Enhance a Mattress

If your mattress is on its last legs, we don’t recommend getting a mattress topper as a last-ditch quick fix — no mattress topper can fix a saggy, unsupportive mattress. But it is an affordable way to optimize the firmness level of a new mattress, or add extra support to a mattress that still has a lot of life left in it.

4. You’re Heading to College

We don’t need to tell you that college dorm mattresses usually suck — and with the stress of coursework, exams, and more, the last thing college students need is a bad night’s sleep. Adding a mattress topper can be a great way to make those dorm mattresses more comfortable and supportive, so college kids can get the rest they need. (And yes, the Bear Mattress Topper comes in a Twin XL!)

5. You’re a Side Sleeper

Side sleeping is very common, but it has some drawbacks: More pressure gets put on the hips and shoulders, which can contribute to lower back pain and other unwanted aches. If your mattress is too firm, it can make that pressure on your joints worse; if your mattress is too soft, your hips and shoulders will sink down further and put more strain on your spine. But if you add a mattress topper, you can find the perfect firmness to keep your hips, spine, and shoulders supported and ache-free.

6. You or Your Partner Move Around at Night

Sleeping with someone who tosses and turns, or gets up a lot in the middle of the night, can be disruptive. If you don’t already have a mattress that reduces motion transfer, adding a memory foam topper can help do so, making it less likely that you or your partner will wake up in the middle of the night.

7. Certain Toppers Can Help Keep You Cool

Memory foam tends to run hot, which is why many people assume a memory foam mattress topper will make their sleep sweatier and more restless. However, new technology has made it so you can reap all the comfort of memory foam without getting overheated.

For example, the memory foam of the Bear Pro Topper (along with Elite Hybrid, Bear Hybrid, and Bear Pro) is infused with copper, which is highly conductive and pulls away excess heat while you sleep. Our topper also is made with Sleep Recovery Technology in the cover that acts as a thermoregulator, keeping you nice and cool at night.

The Bottom Line

Adding a mattress topper to your bed can’t hurt — though it may be unnecessary if your mattress already provides the perfect amount of support for your body. We recommend sleeping on a new mattress for about a month, so you can adjust to the feel before determining whether you need the added support of a topper.
